Bangkok is a city you feel before you see it: the warm air when you step outside, the hum of motorbikes, the smell of street food drifting over a canal. Whether that is a delight or a struggle depends a lot on the month you choose.

The best time to visit Bangkok is November to February, when it is drier and the heat is easier to enjoy. The rainy season is cheaper and quieter, and the hot months are best for travellers who love the sun. Here is how to choose.

When is the best time to visit Bangkok?

For comfortable weather, plan for November to February. Here is how the three seasons compare.

SeasonMonthsWeatherCrowds and prices
Cool and dryNovember to FebruaryAbout 20 to 30°C, lower humidityBusiest, highest hotel rates
HotMarch to MayOften above 35°C, April hottestModerate, with a Songkran spike
RainyJune to OctoberAbout 25 to 33°C, humid, frequent showersQuietest, lowest prices

Sources differ slightly on exact temperatures and on when the rainy season starts, so treat these as ballpark figures.

What is Bangkok’s weather like month by month?

Is November to February really the best time to visit Bangkok?

For most visitors, yes. The air is drier, evenings are pleasant and you can walk between temples without feeling wrung out. It is also the most popular stretch of the year, so book early.

The weather is the draw. Lower humidity makes sightseeing, river trips and rooftop evenings far more enjoyable, and the festive season adds events such as Chinese New Year celebrations in Yaowarat. The trade-off is higher hotel prices, busier attractions and tours that sell out.

Which cool-season month is best?

November is the easiest compromise. The monsoon is ending, rain tapers off and the crowds have not peaked yet. December and January are the classic choices if you want the driest, coolest days, and February starts to warm up again.

Is the rainy season a bad time to visit Bangkok?

Not necessarily. Rain usually comes as short, heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle, and the city is cheaper and quieter. It is more humid, and nights are less cool than in December and January.

How bad is the rain?

September is usually the wettest month, with more rainy days than any other. A sensible plan is to do outdoor sights in the morning, then move to museums, malls or a long lunch when the sky darkens. Carry a small umbrella or poncho.

What about flooding?

Heavy rain can flood some streets, and this year has been unusually wet: floods have affected much of Thailand since mid-September, as AP reported. Our post on the 2026 floods and Bangkok’s airports explains what happened, and our general flood update and Is Thailand Safe guide are worth a look if you are travelling in the wet months.

When is it too hot to visit Bangkok?

March to May is the hottest stretch, with temperatures often above 35°C and approaching 40°C in April. It is still a good time for travellers who enjoy pools, air-conditioned malls and rooftop bars.

If you go, start early, plan indoor activities for the middle of the day and drink more water than you think you need.

Which festivals are worth planning around?

Bangkok has several events worth timing your trip around.

  • Songkran (mid-April): the Thai New Year water festival, with big celebrations on Silom Road and around Sanam Luang.
  • Loy Krathong (November): lanterns and floating baskets on the full moon. See our guide to where to float a krathong.
  • Chinese New Year (January or February): the liveliest scenes are along Yaowarat Road in Chinatown.
  • King’s Birthday (28 July): celebrated across the city.

Songkran dates move slightly each year, so confirm them closer to your trip. If you are planning a wider trip, our best time to visit Thailand guide covers the whole country.

How do you make a Bangkok trip smoother in peak season?

Book hotels and tours early, and plan for busier airports. When you land at a popular time, immigration can take a while, especially after a long flight. Fast Track Thailand offers priority immigration help at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, which many travellers find helpful in the busiest months.

Which month is the cheapest to visit Bangkok?

September and October are usually the cheapest, because they fall in the rainy season, when hotel rates drop. Check the flood situation before you book, since heavy rain can disrupt plans.

What is the best month for a first trip to Bangkok?

November or December is a safe pick. You get comfortable weather, festivals and plenty of open venues, although prices are higher and some places book up early.

Is a rainy-season trip to Bangkok worth it?

It can be, if you are flexible and like quieter streets. Pack light layers and a rain jacket, and keep an eye on forecasts from the Thai Meteorological Department.

Whatever month you choose, Bangkok rewards a bit of planning. A smooth arrival is a good place to start.
