Phuket Airport Thailand: Guide for First Time Travellers

On many flights, there is a moment just before landing at Phuket Airport when the plane drops low over the Andaman Sea and the long sandy curve of Mai Khao Beach slides past the window. For many travellers, it is their first real taste of Thailand’s biggest island, and it is a good one.

The airport itself is refreshingly manageable: compact, well signposted and a short drive from some of the island’s loveliest beaches. Still, a first visit always goes more smoothly with a little local knowledge. This guide covers what to sort before you fly, how arrival works, the best ways to reach your hotel, and a few tips for the journey home.

Phuket Airport at a Glance

Phuket International Airport is the main gateway to Phuket and the wider Andaman coast, including Khao Lak and Krabi. Run by Airports of Thailand, it is one of the country’s busiest airports, welcoming more than 17 million passengers in 2025. Most are holidaymakers flying in from Europe, Australia, Russia, China and across Asia, alongside plenty of domestic flights from Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Before You Land at Phuket Airport

A few minutes of preparation at home pays off the moment you land. The most important task is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), which every foreign traveller must submit on the official TDAC portal within the three days before arrival. It is free and quick, and our step-by-step TDAC guide explains every field. It is also worth checking how long you can stay. Most visitors now get 30 days visa-free, and our guide to Thailand immigration rules has the details.

Two small things make arrival day noticeably easier. Install Grab and add a card before you fly, so you are not setting up an account in a busy arrivals hall. And if you can, buy an eSIM at home. There is a quiet pleasure in landing, switching on your phone and simply being connected.

Arriving at Phuket Airport: Step by Step

Arrival at Phuket Airport follows a simple, logical flow:

  1. Follow the Arrivals signs to immigration.
  2. Show your passport and TDAC QR code, then have your photo and fingerprints taken.
  3. Collect your bags from the carousel.
  4. Walk through customs, using the green channel if you have nothing to declare.
  5. Step into the arrivals hall, where you will find SIM counters, ATMs, currency exchange and a 7-Eleven.

The process itself is quick. It is the wait beforehand that varies. Queues tend to be longest around midday, when several long-haul flights touch down close together, and right through the high season from November to April. Getting from Phuket Airport to Your Hotel

There is no rail link to Phuket Airport, so every onward journey is by road. Happily, there is an option for every budget and travel style:

For travellers on a budget, the Smart Bus is the standout. It runs roughly hourly through the day and works its way down the west coast, stopping at Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. It isn’t the fastest option, but the price is hard to beat. The Airport Bus, by contrast, only runs to Phuket Town. Both leave from the domestic terminal side, a short covered walk from international arrivals.

By car, allow roughly 40 minutes to Phuket Town and 45 to 60 minutes to Patong, with Kata and Karon a little further south. Traffic can stretch those times in the late afternoon and in high season.

Flying Out of Phuket Airport

When it is time to head home, check which terminal your flight uses before you leave the hotel. Aim to arrive about three hours before an international flight, or about two hours before a domestic one. Evenings and high season are the busiest times, and there is no nicer way to end a beach holiday than unhurried.

Once you are through security and departure immigration, why not treat yourself? Airport lounge access offers comfortable seats, food and drinks, and a calm space to wind down before the flight.
