Bangkok to Chiang Mai is 693 km by road and 751 km by rail, and there are three sensible ways to cover it. A flight is the quickest, the sleeper train gives you a bed and saves a hotel night, and the VIP bus is usually the cheapest.
This guide breaks each option down with 2026 fares and the extras people forget.
Which is best for Bangkok to Chiang Mai: flight, train or bus?
| You want the fastest trip | Fly: about 1 hour 15 minutes in the air and 4 to 5 hours door to door |
| You want the experience, and to save a hotel night | Take the sleeper train, Special Express No. 9, in a lower berth |
| You want the lowest fare, or the sleepers are full | Take a VIP bus from Mo Chit 2 |
| You have young children or lots of luggage | Fly, with a checked bag booked in advance |
| You travel in a festival week | Book early whatever you choose, because fares and berths fill first |
How long does each option take, and what does it cost?
| Option | Time | Typical one-way price | Leaves from |
| Flight | About 1 hour 15 minutes in the air | 700 to 1,500 baht booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead, more last-minute | Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi |
| Sleeper train, 2nd class berth | 12 to 14 hours overnight | 771 to 1,041 baht | Krung Thep Aphiwat |
| Sleeper train, 1st class | 12 to 14 hours overnight | 1,253 to 1,653 baht per berth | Krung Thep Aphiwat |
| VIP or first class bus | 9 to 11 hours, mostly overnight | 850 to 1,050 baht | Mo Chit 2 |
| Standard express bus | 10 to 12 hours | 530 to 850 baht | Mo Chit 2 |
Prices are per person, one way. Train fares follow the State Railway of Thailand timetable of 5 December 2025, as reported by Visit Thailand Today. Flight and bus prices move with the date, and booking sites add a fee.
Is flying the best way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
Which airlines and airports fly Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
Low-cost airlines such as Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air fly mainly from Don Mueang, while Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai VietJet use Suvarnabhumi. Around 25 to 40 flights a day link the two cities, according to Thailand Explorer, and the flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes.
How much does a flight really cost?
Booked two to four weeks ahead, low-cost fares typically run 700 to 1,500 baht one way before bags, according to Visit Thailand Today. Festival weeks such as Songkran, Yi Peng and New Year can push fares to around three times that, so book those dates as soon as they are fixed.
Low-cost fares usually include only a 7 kg cabin bag, and a checked bag can add roughly 300 to 600 baht if you buy it in advance, according to Khaosan Road. Thai Airways economy works out at roughly 2,350 to 2,900 baht with a 23 kg bag included, according to Asia Travel Rules.
How long does flying take door to door?
Allow 4 to 5 hours door to door: the trip to the airport, check-in and security, the flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes, then 10 to 15 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport to the Old City, by Grab for about 150 to 250 baht.
Match the airport to your trip: if you arrive internationally at Suvarnabhumi and your onward flight leaves from Don Mueang, the cross-town transfer can take 45 to 90 minutes, which cancels out the time the flight saves.

Is the sleeper train worth taking?
Which sleeper train should I book?
| Train | Leaves | Arrives | 2nd class berth (upper / lower) | Notes |
| No. 9 | 18:40 | About 07:15 | 941 / 1,041 baht | Newest carriages, power socket and reading light at each berth, dining car |
| No. 13 | 20:05 | About 08:45 | 771 / 841 baht | Older carriages, cheaper, a good backup when No. 9 is full |
| No. 51 | 22:30 | About 11:40 | Berths and fan seats | The last sleeper of the night, arrives late morning |
| No. 109 | 14:15 | About 04:05 | 688 / 758 baht | Cheapest berths, but a pre-dawn arrival |
| No. 7 (day) | 07:30 | About 17:50 | Seat about 558 baht | Seats only, for the scenery |
All five leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, also called Bang Sue Grand Station, not Hua Lamphong as older guides say. First class on No. 9 costs about 1,453 baht upper and 1,653 baht lower, and about 2,453 baht for a whole two-berth cabin. On No. 13 it is about 1,253 and 1,453 baht, or 1,953 baht for the cabin.
Second class or first class?
- Second class: open berths with a curtain. An attendant turns the seats into beds in the evening, and the lower berth is wider, has the window and costs about 100 baht more. The upper is narrower, has no window and can feel cold near the air-conditioning. Lights stay on all night, so bring an eye mask.
- First class: a lockable two-berth cabin with a washbasin and its own lights and sockets, plus access to a shower room. Shared cabins are booked by gender, so a solo traveller is paired with a stranger of the same sex unless they pay for the whole cabin.
What is it like on board the sleeper train?
Each carriage has three toilets. The dining car sells hot dinners and breakfast, but food is not included and the menu is basic, so many regulars bring snacks. Expect rail noise and a late arrival of 30 to 60 minutes, so plan for 13 to 14 hours rather than 12.
How do I book the sleeper train?
- Tickets open 90 days before departure. The State Railway of Thailand cut the window from 180 days in April 2026, so pages promising six months are out of date.
- Book at a station window, on the State Railway’s own D-Ticket site, which has an English version and takes foreign cards, or through an agency that adds a booking fee.
- For November to February, Fridays, Sundays and festival weeks, book two to four weeks ahead. Lower berths on No. 9 sell out first.
- Remember that fares are fixed by the State Railway of Thailand, so booking early secures a berth, not a discount.
When you arrive, Chiang Mai railway station is about 3.7 km east of the Old City, and a Grab costs roughly 100 to 150 baht.
Best for: couples, first-timers and anyone who wants the classic journey and a saved hotel night.
Watch out for: 12 to 14 hours of travel, late arrivals and noise for light sleepers.

Is the VIP bus a good option?
Which operators run the buses, and what do they cost?
Sombat Tour and Nakhonchai Air run the premium coaches, with 20 to 32 reclining seats, a blanket and a snack, sold as VIP, First Class or Gold Class at roughly 850 to 1,050 baht.
The state Transport Company added “VIP 24” buses in December 2025 for about 924 baht, and standard 40-seat express coaches cost around 530 to 850 baht.
What is the VIP bus like?
The best departures leave Mo Chit 2 between about 18:30 and 21:30 and reach the Arcade bus station around dawn, 9 to 11 hours later. Seats recline to roughly 45 degrees rather than flat, the air-conditioning can be very cold, and toilet stops replace the freedom to walk around.
How do I book the bus and get from the bus station?
Book a day or two ahead at the terminal or online. Buses are the fallback when trains and cheap flights sell out, and the terminal operators are usually more comfortable and punctual than the cheapest night buses sold around Khao San Road.
What is the real cost of each option side by side?
| Cost item | Flight | Sleeper train | VIP bus |
| Fare | 700 to 1,500 baht | 771 to 1,041 baht (2nd class) | 530 to 1,050 baht |
| Checked bag | About 300 to 600 baht on low-cost airlines | Usually no extra charge | Usually no extra charge |
| Chiang Mai transfer | 150 to 250 baht | 100 to 150 baht | 100 to 150 baht |
| Hotel night saved | No | Yes | Yes |
| Door-to-door time | 4 to 5 hours | 12 to 14 hours | 9 to 11 hours |
| Rough all-in cost* | 850 to 2,350 baht | 870 to 1,190 baht | 630 to 1,200 baht |
Can I break the journey on the way?
The line passes three former capitals, so a stopover turns one night into a short trip: Ayutthaya is about an hour from Bangkok, Phitsanulok is the base for Sukhothai, and Lampang is a quiet Lanna town two hours before Chiang Mai.
What if I land in Bangkok first and connect to Chiang Mai?
If you are flying into Thailand and continuing to Chiang Mai the same day, leave a generous gap between landing and your onward flight, because immigration, bags and check-in all come first. Staying at one airport helps: Suvarnabhumi suits international arrivals connecting to Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Thai VietJet or Thai AirAsia.
File your free Thailand Digital Arrival Card in the three days before you land. Thailand’s auto gates at Suvarnabhumi are for returning visitors who meet a few conditions, so first-timers should expect a staffed counter. Fast Track Thailand guides you through a priority immigration lane at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, which gives you more time for your onward flight.
Our guide to fast track versus regular immigration explains the difference. We do not operate at Chiang Mai, but we can help at the Bangkok airports before you connect, and our airport lounge page is an optional extra before your flight north.
